10. Stargazing
505 words
Kaikias was most often an early to bed, early to rise type of kitsu. She felt her best under the bright, warm light of the sun so that was usually where she spent most of her time, sleeping once the sun when down. This habit became more difficult in the winter when the sun spent less time in the sky and the nights seemed to stretch on forever. Some nights, like this particular one, she got restless. The sun had gone down hours ago, but it wasn't all that late. Being out in the dark was its own kind of scary, but she was tired of being inside. So, bundled in clothing against the biting cold, Kai headed out into Silverlight.
Despite her apprehensions about the dark, Kai did have to admit that nighttime held its own charms. While the day had been rather cloudy, much to her annoyance, the night sky was all but clear. The stars above were beautiful to observe, and they could only been seen in the dark like this. They were a bit like clouds, she noted, in the way that if you looked at them just right, you could start to see shapes and patterns in them. Maybe that would be her activity tonight: just taking a moment to stargaze.
Her steps were unhurried and aimless as she made her way down the paths of Silverlight. She didn't even need to go anywhere in particular to see the countless stars in the sky. All she had to do was look up. (And maybe hope that she didn't run into anyone in her reverie, but that was a separate issue.) It was easy to get lost in their sparkling depths, the way they went on for as far as the eye could see and more. It wasn't hard to imagine that a kitsu could spend their whole life counting and still not get them all.
Kai wasn't sure when she had stopped walking. It had been an unconscious decision, but it probably for the better, frankly. It would have been embarrassing, even if no one was out and about at night to see, if she had run into something while she was busy marveling at the stars. A light wind blew through the street, carrying a chill down from the mountain. A shiver ran down the celestial's spine. Her fur fluffed up and she tugged her cloak closer to her. Maybe she'd make an effort some other night to come out and check out the sky again. A night that was a little less cold, perhaps. Maybe she'd even bring a friend next time! That would be fun. They could point out shapes in the stars to each other and maybe even come up with stories to go along with them! The thought alone was enough to put a smile on her face.
For now, though, it was about time for Kai to return home where it was warm. Her mind was clear and now it was time to rest.
